Rugby Motors

South Africa’s very first mockumentary style sitcom, commissioned by DStv’s Afrikaans language channel, kykNET. The show is the brainchild of long-time friends and collaborators Zaheer Goodman-Bhyat and Louw Venter.

David Cloete (David Isaacs) is a mechanic who dreams of being a famous drag racer. He runs his business, Rugby Motors, from his workshop in the backyard of his house in Rugby, a working class neighbourhood of Cape Town. His mother, Granny Cloete (Shaleen Surtie-Richards) also runs her small baked goods and grocery store from the house’s kitchen. David is Granny’s “everything”. David’s father left to go “buy some cigarettes” more than 20 years ago and never made his way home again. David’s best friend and lovable appy is Loki (Louw Venter). Loki may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but he is David’s most loyal supporter. Quanita (Quanita Adams) is Rugby Motors’ girl friday. She reckons herself to be quite the executive, when in fact she spend more time shopping online than actually doing her work. Other regular characters include Whitey (Abduragman Adams), David’s landlord and childhood enemy, Killer (Terence Bridgett), Rugby’s most notorious and most closeted gangster and Lesley de Beer (Michelle Scott), Granny’s busy-body neighbour and nemesis.

Rugby Motors, Season 1 premieres on DStv’s channel 144 on Fridays at 19:30 from 5 October to 28 December 2012.
